PakTech Handles + Custom Lid Colors โ€” What They Cost

Two upgrades brands always ask about. Real numbers on the per-can adder and when they actually pay off in shelf appeal.

Every week someone asks us about PakTech handles and colored lids. They've seen them on their competitor's shelf and they want that look. Both upgrades are real, both cost money, and both can absolutely be worth it โ€” but only if you understand the economics before you commit. Here are the actual numbers.

PakTech Handles: The Basics

What they are

PakTech carriers are injection-molded plastic handles made from High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE #2) โ€” 100% recycled material from post-consumer waste, manufactured by PakTech in Eugene, Oregon. They snap over the tops of standard cans and hold 4, 6, or 8 cans together into a multipack. The loop-style handle is ergonomic, the branding is printed directly on the carrier, and the curbside-recyclability story resonates with better-for-you beverage consumers.

Why brands use them

Cost per carrier

PakTech carriers typically cost $0.17โ€“$0.22 per carrier depending on format, quantity ordered, and current resin pricing. At that rate:

Example: 4-Pack
12 oz slim can, 4-pack
PakTech carrier$0.19
Per-can cost adder$0.048 / can
Per-case (24 cans, 6 carriers)$1.14
Case adder~$1.14
Example: 6-Pack
12 oz slim can, 6-pack
PakTech carrier$0.21
Per-can cost adder$0.035 / can
Per-case (24 cans, 4 carriers)$0.84
Case adder~$0.84
Order minimums: PakTech typically requires a minimum order of 5,000 carriers per SKU for custom printed carriers. Plain (unprinted) carriers may be available in smaller quantities through distributors. If you're at pilot scale, discuss with your co-packer โ€” some facilities maintain a stock of standard carriers they supply at lower MOQs.

Color options

PakTech offers over 30 standard colors in its carrier lineup. Popular choices in the craft beverage space include:

Custom colors outside the standard palette require a tooling conversation with PakTech directly and typically have higher minimums and lead times. Most brands find a suitable match in the existing color library.

Custom Lid Colors (CDL Ends)

What they are

Standard aluminum can lids come in a bright silver finish. Custom Decorated Lids (CDL) โ€” also called colored ends โ€” are lids that have been coated or lithographed in a specific color before seaming. The most common format is a solid-color lid that matches or contrasts the can body artwork, though spot-color and metallic options exist.

Cost per lid

Colored ends typically add $0.02โ€“$0.06 per end over a standard bright lid, depending on:

Solid color end
Most common request
Cost adder / end$0.02โ€“$0.035
Per-case adder (24 ends)$0.48โ€“$0.84
Minimum order50,000โ€“100,000 ends
Rough case add~$0.65
Printed / metallic end
Higher impact, higher cost
Cost adder / end$0.04โ€“$0.06
Per-case adder (24 ends)$0.96โ€“$1.44
Minimum order100,000+ ends
Rough case add~$1.20
MOQ reality check: 50,000โ€“100,000 ends is 2,000โ€“4,000 cases of 24-count product. If you are running 200โ€“300 cases per production run, you would be sitting on 6โ€“20 runs' worth of ends in inventory. Discuss phased delivery schedules with your end supplier, or use brite + sleeve in early production and transition to CDL ends once your velocity supports the volume.

When Does the Upgrade Pay Off?

Both PakTech carriers and custom lids are aesthetic upgrades, not operational necessities. Here is how to evaluate whether they pencil:

  1. Can you pass through the cost? If your retailer is retailing your 4-pack at $12.99, adding $0.50 in packaging costs cuts your margin without increasing price. If your positioning allows $14.99โ€“$15.99, the premium packaging helps justify that price point to consumers.
  2. Does your distribution channel care? Natural/specialty retailers (Whole Foods, Sprouts, local co-ops) and better-for-you convenience chains respond to premium packaging. Conventional grocery chains and club stores are primarily SKU-count and price-per-ounce buyers โ€” PakTech won't move the needle in those channels.
  3. Do you have the volume to avoid excess inventory? Buying 100,000 custom ends for a product you're selling 200 cases/month is a significant working-capital commitment. Don't let packaging enthusiasm outpace velocity reality.
  4. Is sustainability messaging part of your brand story? PakTech's 100% recycled/recyclable HDPE story is a genuine differentiator in certain categories. If you're marketing to eco-conscious consumers, it is table stakes, not a luxury.
Our recommendation: Start with brite cans + printed shrink sleeves and plain silver lids for your first 1โ€“3 runs. Once you have retail placement, understand your velocity, and can commit to a meaningful volume, step up to PakTech and CDL ends. The packaging upgrade is more powerful when you can actually fill the cooler door than when you're still getting a buyer to take a first meeting.
